I arrived in London early on the Friday morning and assisted with setting up the awards, menus and leaflets. As the guests started arriving it gave me a chance to have conversations with people I would otherwise, only usually get to speak to on the phone or via email. So, it’s always nice putting a face to the name. All the hard work of my head office colleagues of the last six months preparations now seemed distant. From sending out emails and letters to nominees, to arranging the awards certificates. At head office we have been preparing for the awards since summer 2023. They take place once a year to show our appreciation for our fabulous volunteers and the hard work they put into our events. The members are nominated from their areas, shortlisted and invited for a lovely lunch and drinks reception and ceremony. The ambience on the day was very relaxed and the food was very welcome and well received.
Together with my colleague, Abi, we presented the awards to the deserving winners. Despite being both very nervous during rehearsals, we eventually eased, and noticed everyone having the most enjoyable time.
There were eight categories to present:
- Hayward Trophy
- Wellbeing Award
- Russell Scott Award
- Volunteer of The Year (Lord Turnbull)
- Newcomer Award - Set up in 2023 and presented to one of the volunteers for setting up CSSC’s first Women’s Rugby event.
- Innovation Award
- Sportsperson Award
- Merit Award

We had people attending from various backgrounds ranging from MOD to our guest of honour from the Royal Hospital Chelsea (Pensioners).
The afternoon started off with plenty of light jokes, emotional dedications and a look towards CSSC in the past, present and future.
At the end of the day when all the guests had begun their journey home, we were left with mixed emotions on another successful awards ceremony.
Look out for my next blog featuring Days out using CSSC offers and savings.
