Whether you are taking part in Active Wellbeing during May or just fancy a walk, then why not join us for a leisurely stroll along and around the River Adur at Shoreham-by Sea. This walk is open to all CSSC members (children and dogs also welcome).

The full walk is 3.5miles (5.6km) but is configured in 2 loops making a figure of 8. Both loops return to the start point, giving you the choice to do part or all of the walk.

On The Day

The walk starts at the Adur Recreation Ground car park. The first loop of (2 miles/3.2km) follows the river along a largely gravel path to the wooden Old Shoreham Toll Bridge. Here there may be an opportunity to stop for a drink if the mobile coffee van is open. We cross the bridge, taking in the good views of Lancing College Chapel, then turn back towards Shoreham, passing the Shoreham Airshow memorial. The tarmac path takes us back to the A259 where we go back across the river towards our start point. Here, you have a choice of leaving the walk, or maybe go into Shoreham town for some shopping or something to eat or drink, or continuing on to the second loop.

The second loop (1.5 miles/2.4km) follows a concrete path behind an eclectic mix of houseboats, one of which recently featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs and another of which is available as an Airbnb. We continue along the river side to the footbridge across the river into Shoreham town, where there is an array of shops, cafes and restaurants. It’s then a simple stroll back to the start point.

Depending on walking speed, stops at points of interest etc, the full walk should take approx. 1.5 hrs, split 50 mins for loop 1 and 40 mins for loop 2. Of course, if you decide to go shopping or grab something to eat or drink it will take somewhat longer. This walk follows flat, largely gravel, tarmac or concrete footpaths. Even so, you are advised to wear suitable footwear as there can be puddles and muddy when wet. The footpaths used are suitable for buggies and wheelchairs, but can be busy at times as this is a very popular walk. There are interesting views and features throughout the walk, with plenty of opportunities for some bird watching along the estuary. The Adur Recreation Ground car park is free of charge and has toilet facilities. There are additional facilities in the town.
