Kynren – An Epic Tale of England is the UK’s ‘must see’ spectacular live-action show. Launched in 2016, in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, the epic performance takes the audience on an immersive journey through 2,000 years of history, myth and legend.

The 1,000-strong cast and crew of volunteers engage in a complex and robust set of training programmes with highly-skilled performance industry specialists, to deliver the skills needed to produce world-class entertainment. Performed every summer on a 7.5-acre stage – the scale of five football pitches – the action-packed production includes magnificent horses and a menagerie of other starring animals and is played out in front of an 8,000-seat ampitheatre known as the Tribune. The world class show is brought to life with magnificent sets, mass choreography, combat, stunts, horsemanship, stunning pyrotechnics and amazing special effects, including water jets and state of the art video projections.

Award-winning composer Nathan Stornetta has worked alongside film score master Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, The Dark Knight Rises, Pirates of the Caribbean), and has created Kynren’s epic soundtrack, that evokes drama and excitement. The dialogue itself features the distinctive tones of Kevin Whately, best known for his roles in Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Inspector Morse and Lewis. Kevin plays the part of Old Arthur, the character who reveals the secret of time travel to Young Arthur, setting him off on his quest for knowledge and discovery of the meaning of ‘Kynren’. Kynren echoes the Anglo Saxon word ‘cynren’, meaning generation, kin or family, and reflects the inspiration among those involved in the production.

Voted the best event for groups at the 2023 Group and Leisure Travel Magazine Awards, and ranked by TripAdvisor as one of the ‘Top Five Shows to See in the UK’, Kynren is an enthralling live summer family entertainment. Audiences watch from the 8,000-seater Tribune which provides panoramic views across the giant outdoor set.

Kynren takes place at 11Arches Park in Bishop Auckland, just 25 minutes from Durham and Darlington, and a town steeped in history spanning the Romans, generations of powerful Prince Bishops, horse-racing, and the Industrial Revolution.

Gates open at least two and a half hours before the start of each show. Guests arriving in good time will be able to get food and drinks from our Food Court and Bar, or visitors can upgrade to our exclusive pre-show dining experience, Arches Hall Dining, at an additional cost.
