The club was founded at GCHQ in 1948 as a Civil Service Gun and Archery Club.  It took its name from the colour of the centre of both targets: black from the rifle target and gold from the archery target.  The gun club later folded and the archery club became known as The Black & Gold Archery Club.

We are proud to celebrate our origins through association with the Cotswold Area Civil Service Sports Association, where we shoot in the Summer.  We also support the Civil Service Archery Association, hosting the annual South West Regional Tournament on the CACSSA field. We also run our own Spring/Summer Tournaments on the field during the month of May and July each year.

Days Out

The highlights of the season are the 3 society days out. We visit some fantastic courses normally within 1hr of Cheltenham. Recent courses played include The Rolls of Monmouth, Kings Norton and Burford. The typical format is:

  • Arrive for breakfast
  • Morning 9 hole team competition
  • Lunch
  • Afternoon 18 hole individual competition
  • Dinner

The society benefits from being able to negotiate some extremely good deals, so the typical cost of a day out is around £45 including everything above and prizes.

Knockout Competition

The society organises optional singles and doubles knockout competitions.

Matches

We arrange team matches against local societies. Selection is based on availability, and generally if you are available you will get a game!

Handicaps

The society is committed to ensuring fair and competitive events, and we welcome golfers of all standards. To qualify for prizes on days out, or to enter the matches or knockout competitions, members must have a valid handicap. This can either be a valid and current WHS handicap index, or a society handicap can be obtained by handing in cards to the committee.

When and Where We Play

We are an active club with over 25 members, albeit a long way from the best sailing areas.

The club organises participation in two races per year. The Inter Departmental Offshore Regatta(IDOR) which is organised by the Civil Service Sailing Association (CSSA) and the Griffin invitational regatta.

For the cruisers we normally have two club organised long weekend events. We try and extend our cruising grounds by chartering from Plymouth, and in the past we have chartered in Scotland.

Each year we combine a taster day for people that want to try big boat sailing and training for our racing crew. Collecting the yachts from the Hamble at 1600. Then a short sail/motor to Cowes on the first evening where dinner is organised in one of the Cowes yacht clubs. The next day depending on the weather a sail in the Solent and anchor for lunch returning to the Hamble by 1600

We have CSSA qualified skippers, which means we can charter “Sea Essay” the CSSA yacht based on the Hamble.

We don’t have a dinghy section but if you are interested in dinghy sailing then we have a number of members who are members of Whitefriars Sailing Club at Ashton Keynes.

We organise training events for First Aid and Radio licences, and a number of members are going through their RYA shore-based courses and on water day skipper and coastal skipper courses.

Sailing is not a cheap sport. We try and keep the costs down by chartering in the spring and autumn and filling the yacht. Which can make it cosy!
