Inspired by remarkable true events.
“It’s built for us, isn’t it? The Spitfire. Built for women.”
New Year’s Eve, 1959. Decades after answering the call, two women separated by the war meet again as the rain hammers down on the windows of The Spitfire pub.
As we hear their story, we’re transported back to a time when female pioneers defied expectations and soared through the skies.
Spitfire Girls is inspired by the extraordinary true stories of the women who dared to fly during WWII and the incredible bond that tied them together. Funny and heart-warming, this is an untold story of strength, courage and loss. But above all else, hope.
Spitfire Girls was developed with the support of the National Theatre’s Generate programme. This production contains themes of war.
Note from Volunteer: This one is very close to my heart as I used to know one of the men who taught women how to fly in WW2 (although I think he taught bombers rather than spitfires). They had only a hand full of lessons and they didn't even cover all the controls in the cockpit, just the ones they would need, if there was any issue on the flight outside those minimal instuctions the women had no way of knowing what the problem was or dealing with it. There is no record of how many died while doing this vital work, all we know is that the Air Transport Auxillary, which employed women pilots, suffered 174 fatalities among its male and female pilots. My friend was always so upset that it took so long for their contribution to the war effort to be recognised, and if he was with us today he would be so pleased that part of their story is being celebrated.
