From medieval paths to mystery houses—discover the secrets beneath your feet.
Join us for a lunchtime walk through Halcon’s rich history. Explore ancient footpaths, uncover traces of medieval settlements, and see how the landscape evolved from rural fields to urban streets.
We will follow the footsteps of ancient footpaths and tracks pausing to observe evidence of a medieval settlement on the lower slopes of Creech Barrow Hill. We will see how the local environment has evolved from the rural landscape to the urban mix of listed and contemporary buildings as we consider how the A38 road would have been before the M5.
Discover antiquated street furniture providing clues of early 20th century communications. Even further back in time, the turnpike road of the Taunton Trust and how in 1851 the gate from the Spital Toll House was moved to Halcon Corner near the junction of the Taunton Turnpike Trusts roads northwards to Thurloxton and the other eastwards to Ashill.
An ornate house was built but where is it Now? We pause at Halcon Corner to view the evidence of once grand house and gardens formally known as "Mile End House" and further along the Grade II listed building Bloomfield Lodge unfortunately now dilapidated. Then the chance to Hug a Horse chestnut as we walk through a wonderful avenue in the park. The BIG reveal as to the trail of antiquated street furniture is explained. The “Mystery house” that once needed to be outside of Town!
See how the Bus depot has evolved from a 1920s private company to the Modern Electric charging station. We make our way back via Roman Road so have your phones ready for the Taunton version of the Abbey Road photo shoot opportunity! Finally, we view the UKHO site from its former entrance and follow the boundary stones back to the Start of our walk.
History on our doorstep. You may have noticed the anchor at the entrance to the UKHO, but have you noticed the iconic symbol carved in stones around the boundary?
