What does a CSSC Sports Champion do?
Help shape the future of sport at CSSC as a Sports Champion. Whether you're passionate about encouraging participation, sharing your expertise or helping deliver memorable sporting experiences, you'll play an important role in supporting and growing sport across our community. By championing your sport, you'll help create engaging, inclusive and accessible opportunities that inspire more members to get active.
Working alongside the CSSC Sports Team and fellow volunteers, you'll contribute ideas, share valuable insight, promote opportunities and support the planning and delivery of national and local activities. You'll also help us understand the needs of members and identify ways to improve and develop our sporting offer. With a flexible level of commitment to suit your availability, it's a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference, develop new skills, expand your network and connect with like-minded people who share your passion for sport.
Davie Elder – Sports Champion, Football
Davie began as a CSSC volunteer many years ago, organising local and regional Football tournaments. He now sits on our Volunteer and Sports Committee along with our Executive Team to help shape our sporting programme at CSSC.
There have been many changes throughout my time as a volunteer, but, the sense of community amongst the Civil Service and wider Public Sector has remained constant. Whether you want to volunteer for a specific event or role, the rewards remain the same, a knowledge you are providing accessible events for members and the satisfaction of a job well done.
Volunteering is my way of giving back to an organisation that has supported its members so generously over the years. Hockey has played a significant role in my life since childhood, so being able to help organise and shape tournaments for CSSC members is truly an honor. As an active player, I gain unique insight into what our members need and expect from these events. This perspective enables me to adapt and refine our tournaments, ensuring they remain engaging and relevant for everyone involved. Witnessing the positive impact of these improvements firsthand is incredibly rewarding and motivates me to continue contributing to CSSC’s vibrant sporting community.
William Sowter (Billy) – Sports Champion, Hockey
Billy is actively involved in every facet of CSSC hockey, playing a pivotal role in organising representative fixtures that bring together top civil servants to compete against teams like the RAF, the Police, and the Army. In addition, he helps coordinate the annual Hockey Festival, an inclusive event welcoming members of all skill levels.
Stephen Jones, Sports Champion – Ski and Snowboarding
CSSC arrange many events over the course of a year, but not everyone has the experience to organise an exclusive group Ski trip. That’s where volunteers like Stephen can be a valuable source of information and hands on experience.
I have acted as the Winter Sports organiser for CSSC Ski trips for the last few years. I use my knowledge and experience of very many trips to take groups of CSSC members from all over the UK to destinations in the alps. The success of the ski trips must surely be seen by the fact that it runs year after year, and along the way attracts new additions - across all abilities, to the event, including new members as regulars alike.
