Feeling like Royalty for a day by Naomi Hickey

Read about Naomi's incredible day at the King’s first Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

“Wow, Wow, wow!! Really?”  - this was my reaction when finding out I’d been chosen to represent CSSC at the King’s first Royal Garden Party on 3 May at Buckingham Palace.

I’ve been a volunteer for CSSC for over 20 years and this was going to be one of my most memorable moments!

Hosted by the King & Queen, who were accompanied by The Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent. A wonderful and unique opportunity to visit the Palace, meet the King and other members of the Royal Family, mingle with fellow guests, explore the Palace Grounds and enjoy tea and cakes!

Next decision was who to take as my plus one. How to break it to my hubby that I’d love to take my “very royalist” sister instead of him – ha, ha!! Task complete, sister in absolute floods of tears at the invite, onto searching for the perfect outfit!

We were further overwhelmed by receiving a personal invitation for a meet and greet with HRH Duchess Gloucester, the Patron of CSSC!

So, what happens at a Garden Party?

Well, the gates open from 3pm and the party officially opens with a military band playing the National Anthem to announce the arrival of the Royal Family. Two military bands continue to play a selection of music throughout the afternoon, while the Royal Family make their way along lanes of guests. With each taking a different route, so everyone has an equal chance of speaking to at least one of the Royal Family, before they arrive at the Royal Tea Tent. Guests are then free to eat, drink and stroll around the gardens.

It was a genuine honour to be invited to attend. To be part of this prestigious event, in such a special year of the Coronation, was indeed a once in a lifetime experience. There was a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, where it was truly inspirational listening to other attendees about their reasons for being there.

A warm welcome

HRH Duchess of Gloucester made us feel at ease and her knowledge of CSSC and the recent Centenary celebrations was great. She loves the health and wellbeing support we offer our members through our benefits and events.

It was amazing being able to see a part of London that’s normally out of bounds. A treasured memory which will last a very long time!
