Inclusivity Spotlight:
For many Deaf people, BSL is their first or preferred language, meaning access to BSL is essential for genuine inclusion.

As part of our ongoing Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) work at CSSC, we actively associate with organisations that share our commitment to accessibility, inclusion and wellbeing. Our association with WWT (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust) helps us promote experiences that are open, welcoming and accessible to all.

One example of this is WWT’s British Sign Language (BSL) guided tours, which ensure Deaf and BSL-using visitors can fully engage with nature, wildlife and learning opportunities without communication barriers.

What is British Sign Language (BSL)?

British Sign Language is the primary language used by many Deaf people in the UK. It is a fully recognised language with its own grammar and structure, using hand movements, facial expressions and body language to communicate meaning. For many Deaf people, BSL is their first or preferred language, making access to BSL essential for genuine inclusion.

Through our association with WWT, CSSC helps to:

  • Highlight accessible and inclusive activities for our members and colleagues
  • Support organisations that prioritise inclusive design and representation
  • Encourage participation in experiences that promote wellbeing and connection with nature
  • Align external partnerships with our EDI priorities and values

By associating with partners like WWT, CSSC continues to champion inclusive opportunities and remove barriers, ensuring everyone has the chance to take part, connect and thrive.
