Bushra’s Blog: Breaking Barriers on the Golf Course – A Day of Golf, Culture & Connection

On Saturday 20th July, I had the pleasure of being part of something truly meaningful: a women’s golf taster event hosted by CSSC in partnership with the Muslim Golf Association (MGA) and Co-founder Amir Malik and their two coaches Hannah Crump and Alistair Spink.

But this day wasn’t just about golf — it was about representation, visibility, and most importantly, belonging.

We welcomed a truly fantastic group of women from a wide range of backgrounds — different cultures, faiths, ages, and life experiences — all coming together with a shared willingness to try something new. For some, it was their very first time holding a golf club. For others, it was a step towards reclaiming confidence and community through sport.

What struck me most was the energy. From the moment people arrived, there was a genuine sense of curiosity, openness, and encouragement. The MGA coaches created such a warm, non-judgmental environment — they were humorous, patient and supportive, and very quickly there was a real sense of team spirit. It didn’t matter how well anyone played — it was about being there, showing up, and having a go.

We were split into two groups, each led by a coach who were humorous, engaging and understanding we began with a warm-up session. As it was my first-time trying golf, I felt a mix of nerves and excitement. Our coach, Alistair, was fantastic — he patiently taught us the basics, from how to hold the club correctly to understanding the different sizes and how to use them.

When I first reached for the golf club, I felt like all eyes were on me. But that quickly faded. Everyone was focused on their own journey, learning at their own pace and simply having fun. After a few attempts, I finally made a successful putt — I was so happy I jumped with excitement and shouted over to Alistair, who was just as thrilled as I was!

We then swapped activities with the other group — while they practiced putting, we moved on to pitching. The warm-up session was a great way to build confidence before heading out onto the stunning 350-acre golf course.

But beyond the golf itself, it was the community that stood out. Women chatted, laughed, cheered each other on, shared stories, and left not only with a new skill but with new friendships and memories.

After the session, we all sat down together to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch provided by MGA, including an amazing spread of mini burgers and fragrant biryani rice. As I looked around the room, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. There was conversations, laughter and excitement.

During the closing moments, CSSC and MGA thanked everyone for taking the time to be part of the event. We also listened to feedback from the women who attended — and it was humbling. Some were emotional, expressing their gratitude for being given the chance to try a sport they never thought they could access.

I was deeply moved. I felt proud of CSSC, proud of MGA, and proud of what we had created together: a safe, welcoming space.

This is just the beginning. CSSC and MGA remain committed to continuing this work — creating inclusive, safe, and inspiring environments where all women can explore, engage, and thrive through sport and activity.

Following the success of our recent women’s golf taster event, we’re now looking ahead to our next one — and we need your help!

We’re seeking a passionate volunteer to take the lead in organising our next CSSC women’s golf event in the Southeast. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved, shape the day, and support women in trying something new in a fun and welcoming environment.

You don’t need to be a golf expert — just someone who’s enthusiastic, organised, and keen to help create another memorable event. You’ll be supported by the CSSC team throughout the process.

If you’re interested or would like to find out more, please drop me an email.

Let’s keep the momentum going and continue encouraging more women to give golf a go!
